Winston Churchill Cartoon
Winston Churchill Cartoon - I have recently finished reading a biography of Churchill by Roy Jenkins, so I thought that I'd draw this cartoon.
I know that the bulldog is a bit of a stereotypical image, but it does suit the look and character of the man very well.
Although Churchill will forever be associated with the bulldog, he was very fond of ginger cats and kept several of them throughout his life. The tradition of keeping one at Chartwell, his country house, continues to this day.
When she was a child, Churchill's daughter Mary has a pet pug. One time the pug fell very ill, Churchill applied great love and command of the English language to compose this little verse for his daughter.
Oh, what is the matter with poor Puggy-wug
Pet him and kiss him and give him a hug.
Run and fetch him a suitable drug,
Wrap him up tenderly all in a rug,
That is the way to cure Puggy-wug.
The dog made a full recovery.
I wonder how many bulldogs have actually been called Winston....
