Republic P-47 Thunderbolt
Republic P-47 Thunderbolt - a cartoon of the 'Jug'
The P-47, or Jug as it was nick-named (short for juggernaut), was the largest single-enginned piston fighter - weighing up to eight tonnes when fully loaded. you can imagine the shock that the British had when they encountered the P-47 for the first time, after being used to their far smaller Spitfires and Hurricanes.
While used as a fighter, the P-47 particularly excelled in a ground attack role. It was used extensively in Europe and Asia, and continued to be used post-war. A few P-47s remain airworthy to this day.
